Ignition Module for 1990 FXRS
Luckily, the dealer had a test ignition module (stock) that they were willing to give me, to get me back on the road. A few hours later, I was on the road. I left a little too quick, as an hour down my tachometer was not acting normally.
While I understand that this stock ignition module would not perform like my hi-rev screaming eagle module, my tachometer was not displaying the correct RPMs. At 75 MPH, my tachometer would previously display around 3200 RPMs. Using the stock ignition module, my tachometer now displays roughly 1600 RPMs. It appears that my tachometer is displaying roughly half of what my actual RPMs are. Another result (coincidence?) is my engine also appears to run much hotter than before. This could just be due to the higher outside temps in UT and WY.
I struggle with fully understanding the ignition/timing stuff on my Harley. When installing the ignition sensor during my rebuild, I recall it looking like a stock unit (as opposed to the Revtec sensor in my other bike). I believe my coil is also a Screaming Eagle unit. ( I base this statement on it's orange color)
My questions are:
1) What is causing my tachometer to not display for correct RPMs? I assume it's due to the stock ignition module, but can this be corrected?
2) I want my hi-rev ignition module back! The guy at JP Cycles in Sturgis, said to buy a new ignition sensor that does away with the ignition module (black box in side cover). I would have bought what he suggested, but he did not sound very knowledgeable or convincing. What do you guys recommend? Engine is 40 thousands over, 10:1 pistons, S&S 520 cam, HSR42 Mukuni, polished/ported heads.
Sorry for being long winded, but look forward to your help.
A lot of guys go with the Ultima ignition. I think that if I needed one, that's what I would go with. I think that's what he was suggesting.
I'm not sure on the part number. Whatever Ultima says is for your bike.
I suggest you become your own expert.
In a hurry !
Dont go to a dealer as they can't fix any better then you can right?
Going to a dealer for the new stuff is bad enough with the new crap.
Dont go there with your old EVO

Will easily install and by following the directions properly your Tach should function normally again.
It almost sounds as if they switched your tach signal or possibly changed from a dual fire to single fire ignition.. The link you posted is for 96 up with Duetch connectors that you don't have...
