The HD gauge is notoriously inaccurate.

Which begs the question; what could we put in that spot that would be more useful?

Can you make it work, maybe.
'86-'95 is the same, '96-'13 is a different part number

After seeing how inaccurate the voltage gauge really is, using a digital multimeter as a reference point, i was wondering the same thing. If it's on the bike, it will always be a distraction. Has anyone seen an oem clock that might fit in that opening? It would have to be more accurate than the voltage gauge

Most OEM gauges...not just Harley's...are not designed to be accurate...they are designed to read near the 12 o'clock position when things are "normal" ...when something changes they usually swing way off so you will see it.

They are like idiot lights with needles...

My guess is that any gauge before the Canbus stuff you can make work. You would possibly have to change the connectors to match the terminals on the new gauge. `
