I recently bought a 1999 softail custom, it has 19 thousand kms on it (12000 miles). Ive put a couple hundred miles on it and ive been noticing a popping sound coming from the carb. and sometimes when its warming up theres a bit of dark smoke from the exhaust.
Tonight I took the air filter off and let the bike warm up. I turned the idle down a bit and sprayed some carb cleaner around the manifold seals. Didnt notice any change in rpms. I decided to take a video of the bike idling and during the video i reved it a few times and when i did so flames shot from the carb. At one point the idle sped up and after a couple twists on the throttle it slowed back to normal. I can send the video to anyone that would like to see if need be. Im sure its a simple fix Im just too green to know.
Thanks in advance
Cheers
edit: Also noticed when i took the air filter off there was a bit of oil? on the plate it mounts to.

Sounds like it's time to clean and adjust the carb.
Oil in the air cleaner is from the breather.
Reroute the breather and problem is solved.
PIcts would be nice but you need 3 more posts before you can post pictures.
What would you like pictures of?
I noticed it has a screamin eagle ignition module. Probably nothing to do with it,but i just want to give as much info as possible where it isnt a stock part.
Your never going to get a good crisp pop of the throttle without hoping or anything else until you bring up your idle to atlas 900 rpm... That low of an idle is not good for the crank pin... And honestly get rid of the piece of **** CV and get an S&S E......
A friend of mine who runs evo sportsters said to replace the manifold seals and put a 45 pilot jet and a 190 main in it for starters, tune it and see how it runs.
