we use a grease called viper lube - I only use it on cables BUT I did say BUT -- the antique machines with fiber gear drives YD is correct graphite powder is the only thing that can be used

Thanks for the information. My bike is an /85 FLHTC so I guess in the antique category Certainly go have the nylon gears in the speedo. Graphite it is then. Prob why I keep going through speedo cables every few years. Appreciate the tip!

You go through a speedo cable every few years for the same reason I do. The drive being on the right side puts an extra kink into the cable

Change the cable before it binds up and damages the drive on the wheel or the spedometer. Mine was 25 years old and I just changed it a couple of months ago because it broke..
