Default 89 FLHTCU tour pack removal

OK guys I don’t blame you at all if you beat me up for asking a question that has probably been asked 1000 times before here but I have been searching high and low for information concerning removing the tour pack for my 89 and making it possibly quick detachable as well and also finding a replacement seat that is a lower profile that will work on the bike also

I’ve seen on this forum the information concerning the detachable two up tour pack rack, HD front docking kit, Harley touring detachable docking hardware kit and I have the part numbers... just not sure it will work for the 89

Can anyone point me towards instructions on the Internet or pictures on the Internet or possibly even have your own pictures of the installation that I can look at and go by I’ve spent hours looking but have found nothing for the 89

I’ve also been told countless times it won’t work by dealerships and other owners that it’s either not worth it or is impossible

... any input would be much appreciated

Thanks,

This would most likely work. you may have to change some bolts and mounting hardware. I did on my 96 road king. You'll most likely have to come up with a plug to be able to disconnect and reconnect the wiring.

[/QUOTE I did it on my 86.You remove the 4 1/4-20 screws that hold it down and replace it w/a previously offered chrome rack you can probably find on e bay.I swap mine when the ol wants to go for a ride.otherwise it sits on the shelf.

I use a trailer connector for mine, so it is just one plug and four bolts and off it comes.

I did something similar, using a military style qd electrical connector I set into the floor of the tourpak. I don't use a radio, so don't have an aerial cable to bother with. Having sorted the electrics the tp is only held on with four screws - qd enough for me! There are no dedicated removable racks for our bikes, they only came along later. There are however successful adaptations of them, retrofitting newer ones, plus a few threads in here on doing it.

As Brown said, Removing the 4 bolts doesnt take long, but you are left with the platform. On my 94 that platform is where the seat bolt goes, so that cant come off without some thought. I opted to find the backrest off a FLHS to cover the platform and round it out.

I didnt change the seat, so I cant help with that.

I added quick connect electrical connectors for the wiring. I just zip tie the bike side wiring to the frame when the pack is off.(

)
Make sure you get the same amount of pins as the number of wires for you wiring. I had to get a 2pin and a 3pin for mine because it has a high stop accessory light in addition to the running lights.

I havent added a quick disconnect for the antennae yet. We just dont use the radio when the pack is off, project for next year i suppose.

also will need this tool

Crappy picture, but I just took mine off. Gonna make up deutsch connector for the tourpak lights. I zup-tied my antenna lead under the seat, still picks up a ton of stations. I'd like to find the flhs back rest to clean up the back of the bike.
I do have the parts needed to make the tourpak a quick release item, saved in my eBay watch list. But 4 bolts and an easy to unhook electrical connection is easy enough. Hardest part of this was getting the tourpak wires out if the amp connector.
