Only a couple systems outperform the stock exhaust system [if ya open the mufflers up a bit] Thinderheader, and LSR comes to mind...
if that is a CV carb... only a K&N element can really improve that, if stockish engine!!!
These are are tough... Very Tough engines indeed... the MoCo Had to quit makin em... they have a Too Long Service life!!!!!
Thanks for feedback. Mine has a k&n filter behind the oem cover. Other than the filter and some aftermarket mufflers it's pretty much stock. Stock carb but I don't know which one. Research suggests it's probably a keihin butterfly carb which are reportedly prone to issues although my bike runs faultlessly and is very smooth. Only slight issue is the common base gasket weep which is only very slight. Unsure when they went to cv carbs but my 1989 model was manufactured in September 1988.
Hey fellas anyone is interested in gear and pulley ratios and their affect on speed check this link out.. there's other calculators also, even cam grinds .. enjoy.. http://www.bigboyzcycles.com/calculators.htm
With your bike down to the frame, I recommend replacing all three rubber mounts. I use stock ones, they're fine with my S&S 107" engine. The True-Track stabiliser kit is a thing of great wonder, sharpens the bike up as soon as you set off, improves steering and stability at all speeds, as well as at speed. I have Ohlins suspension front and rear, courtesy of HDF sponsor Howard at Motorcycle Metal. We'll have your chassis ship-shape in no time!
TruTrack arrived..VERY NICE,, my neighbor saw it and wants one for his 1985 FXRP.. thanks again for the heads up, going with Fox for rear shocks and Progressive cartridge unit for the forks. Give me a little room to adjust the ride height equally and not mess up the geometry .. ran into that problem when I lowered the FLSTS..
picked up a 1989 FLHS, 34k miles wanted to know if anyone has done any upgrades
I'm looking at doing some suspension upgrades, specifically changing the swingarm over to bearings instead of the silcone bushings
Custom Cycle Engineering seems to have a good retrofit kit
Thanks
I went all the way with their kit on a 1982 FLT I converted for a friend, and he loves it. SAR2008-1 conversion kit, and used a 2008 swingarm, with everything attached. He now has a beefier swingarm, easier to adjust, and I swapped the transmission output sprocket, out for a pulley, and used the 2008 belt, wheel, cush drive, etc...everything. I also used the 2008 front forks, brakes(Brembo), wheel, rotors, fender, taillights, and converted it over to a 6 gallon tank, so he has many more choices for seats, now he can use 2008-newer units - (plenty of info on here for that, too!). Now he has the best of both worlds, classic bike, and modern upgrades. I recommend the kit mentioned, because he had the dreaded swingarm cracking found in many of the pre-2002 bikes.
