Default Rocker box bolt copper washers

Putting my engine together, and it has came to this point...the copper washers for the top rocker boxes. The cometic gasket kit came with a thin copper washer, and a fiber washer. I wasn't 100% sure, but,i figured the fiber washer goes under the copper. Well, as I was torquing the bolts to 159lb/in, one of the fiber washers split. Got me looking at things, cause i can't have 7 of one thing and 1 of another.
is the fiber washer needed? The copper washers that were on the bike were a lot thicker than the ones in the cometic kit. Also...someone had used gray rtv on the threads and bottom of those thicker washers. Is a nonhardening sealant useful, like permeated #2? Should I reside those thicker copper washers, or go with the thinner cometic copper washers, with or without the fiber washer. I really, really don't want a leak around the bolts, since they're such an incredible pain in the *** to service while in the bike .What say you guys?

Are you also using the steel washers? I just did mine, and ended up with fiber then copper then steel.

I bet Cometic would send you one of those fibers if you called them.

If it was my bike, I'd be tempted to leave the fiber washer off the front cylinder, right side, front bolt and keep an eye on it. That one won't be too horrible to fix if it turns out it leaks.

No steel washers were on the bike when i got it. Jusy the thick copper washer.
I did think about putting the bolt without the fiber washer in an easy to get to spot.
Maybe i could use the thick copper gasket in place of the steel? I dunno.

I think those kits are for multiple applications. I just used the copper washers on my covers. If you check the parts diagram, I think it only shows the copper ones. Check Ronnie’s HD site to be sure.

It would be nice if Cometic would include some instructions.

On my bike, I'm 99% sure the motor was untouched before I got to it. It had fiber washers under steel washers. That's how I ended up with the three layer sandwich.

I don't know what the Cometic people intend with their kit, but you could probably find some nice, chrome washers at your hardware store.

So the fiber should go on top of the copper?
and yea, I wish there were better instructions with the kit. For the price paid, especially. Only thing i got were some instructions for the mls headgaskets.

Hmm, I don't recall there being any copper washers under my rocker box screws. Just a fiber washer and a steel washer. Well, it WAS about six years ago that I last had the rocker boxes apart, so.

Yeah, the confusion is coming from Cometic and the way they include the coppers without any explanation on how to use them.

I can't see any reason that using just the Cometic fiber washers under the stock steels wouldn't work.
