I have the chance to pickup a wrecked one for cheap.....any weird problems with the 87 year? Had an 89, so I know them for the most part. Thanks in advance....goin frickin stir crazy without the wind.
Depending whether is an '87 or '87 1/2 it may have a 4 piece flywheel rather than 3 piece. If it's stock, the radio and left handlebar volume control will be different. Otherwise, you'll be able to use the same FSM and parts book and you can interchange every piece of the '89 with it.
I wrote that wrong... your '89 may or may not have had a 3 piece flywheel depending on mfg date. All the '87's and '88's had 4 piece...
I really like my 86,only real problems are w/ the front pulley coming loose, and adding a 2nd start relay(see sticky for that ) Otherwise, It's been a great bike.
Like all of them years... the clutch hub is ... "delicate" but... finesse, not force, if ya need to get in there. My Eldest has an '86... lovin it.. for quite some time. and it did not have an easy life...as my youngest had it before Him!!!! I would take it over an early Twinky, certainly. But... I really am Fond of the E motor, and never even been on a Twinky!!!!!
Thanks for the replies......on second look it appears to be an FLTC buy the fuel tank cover and the gauge pod. It was in a front end crash and the the fairing is gone as are the bags. I think he wants to much money for it ($2,500.00) and haven't started the dickering on it yet. He says it's an S&S engine and it does have S&S cylinders on it that I can see from the pics. I need to do a comp test on it to see if the engine is viable..
Poor thing - has been knocked about a lot. I'm not sure when H-D started blacking casings, but with all major engine parts apparently in plain alloy it does look more like an FLHS or base model. The VIN will confirm, you can go to the H-D website and Owners tab to enter it, to get the original spec, colour, etc for your bike.
Look at the serial number on the left case at the base of the cylinders. That's where the HD numbers would be. If they're not there it "might" be an S&S engine, otherwise the cylinders mean nothing. All '87 FLT's had chrome primary, timing and rockers. Could be an FLTP which is rare for an '87. No offense to anyone, but seriously, $1000. would be too much for what's left of it.
Yup, the guy is way out of line on the price and 1K would be the MAX I would pay. It might be an FLHTP from what I can find on line about them.....how "rare" are they?
