My 99 FSLTC has developed an erratic rear cylinder firing. I was checking some things out, and when I pulled the cover off the nose cone it was full of beige goo. The plate has the part number 32448-95A on it. It’s my understanding this is the cam position sensor. Is that correct? Where can I get a replacement?
I'm curious about this. There's a lot of talk around here that indicates that those things have definite lifespan.
The part has been superseded by 32448-95B. I don't know if there is any NOS out there, but if there is, a quick search of the online fiche sites says the MoCo calls this a $180 part.
I see used ones on ebay for $140 or so. I wonder about buying used when this part is a known weak link. How do you know it isn't on the brink of failure? I just pulled the stocker out of my '90. (Part number on it is 32400-80A). Don't know if it would work on yours, and I was none to gentle pulling it out (cut the wires) since I knew I wasn't reusing it, but its yours if you want it and don't mind soldering up some wires.
There are aftermarket ones that seem to be about $40 or $50. Don't know if any of those are worth having, or if any of them are any better than any others.
32448-95A part number is the cam position sensor. The original factory unit beige sealant melts. The replacement unit has a black sealant. Does not really cause a running problem but more of a start problem unless unit gets wet. The unit failing causes hard starts...a lot of cranking, then more cranking, then more cranking then wait a minute or two and slightest touch of start button starts bike. Consider :Review throttle body manifold seal to cylinder for leaks with a spray of wd40...your seals are gone and throttle body is floating allowing air in. I

I must say... That is the most severe melting of the CPS i've ever seen... There might be a heat issue going on there for sure... But for starters I wouldn't think of using a used CPS. Standard Motor Products makes a hall effect pickup that is a direct replacement for what you have. Part # MC-SPA3.
If you search google images with just part number there will be several examples shown of melted beige goo on original factory unit.
The two studs at 3 and 9 o'clock are showing significant oxidation,
With sealant gone some moisture could have destroyed sensor too as there should be no oxidation in that area.
Note. No need to remove exhaust to service if you use a small piece of allen/hex in the allen bolt.
Only remove chrome heat shield.
Then turn allen/hex with a carb wrench.
Then you probably know you will need to time the cam plate sensor rotation as the two slots for studs on plate are set-up for adjusting pick-up sensor.
I have one of the standard motor parts units. Works like a charm. The wire lead is a lot longer than factory, but it works great. Got it off ebay for around $50-60
