Ding ding ding! And the winner is Schex. When I started trying to diagnose my problem one of the things I tried was trying to spray some startling fluid (ether) around the intake ports. Unfortunately I didn't have that little tube to direct the spray, so some of it always got sucked into the carb since the air cleaner was off. Once I found the burned cam position sensor I quit thinking about anything else until I had a new ignition and new coil, but still had my trouble. Yesterday I was rooting around in the garage and found some carb cleaner, complete with the spray tube. I sprayed some on the rear intake port and presto! Rpm increased. Pulled it down this morning and sure enough, bad intake seal. Good to go now, I think. Thanks for the suggestions everyone and in particular hillcountrycustoms who was generous enough to offer the loan of a coil.

One last thing. As mentioned above, I swapped to a Dynatek ignition. My bike starts on the first spin. I recommend it.
