Default Wiring harness help

Can anybody point me in the direction to get a main wiring harness for an 86 softail part number 70216-86?
The oldest I can find is for a 87 softail.

When did the MOCO move the starter solenoid from the primary to the starter motor?

Correction the part number is 70216-85 not -86.

`89 was first year of the modern starter configuration (solenoid mounted on starter).

As long as you use a harness for `90 or earlier I think you will be ok, `91 is when the turn signal module came into the mix, which would make it a little more difficult to adapt.

It`s hard to compare the wiring harnesses by looking at the diagrams, `86 and earlier were drawn using the old method...

Have you considered an aftermarket harness, such as the Ultima (I have no experience with them) ?

A further suggestion, following on from Dan's, is to consider the Moto Gadget m-unit wiring system. A pal rewired his 1990 Glide using one. There are other brands doing a similar job, which simplifies rewiring by using a centralised device.

I haven`t worked on anything older than `88 (as far as Softails go), sorry, I jumped the gun on my answer, that was before I studied the wiring diagrams...

There are some differences between the `86 and the later (87-90) model harnesses, the first thing I noticed was the difference in the turn signal circuit. I think you may need to keep looking for an `86 harness, or consider an aftermarket system such as the Ultima.

Is the main harness too far gone to save? How about the switch harnesses and the dash harness?

Here's the thing owner told me it was an '86 then a couple days later told me it was an '87 so I checked the vin and sure enough it's an '87.

I'm putting on a new main harness, new switch harness, and a new dash panel complete with a new harness for it too.
I'm gonna make a harness for the tail light and rear turn signals.
The light sockets in the dash were very rusted and I couldn't find just the sockets go that's why the new dash pannel.

Every connection on this bike is heavily corroded.
Hell I broke the left front turn signal just trying to get the bulb out!
Not sure how long it sat out in the rain but it must have done it a lot!!!!!!!!

The rear tire is 9 years old, not sure about the front as I think the date code is covered by the table lift clamp but it has weather cracks in the sidewall.

The hell of it is this job started with just a simple tin swap!!!!!

If it's an 87, will the 70216-87a be the correct harness? There are a bunch of reproduction harnesses on ebay if so

Mike, keep us posted on this rehab, it sounds like an interesting project.

It`s always nice to see an old neglected machine of any type fall into the hands of an owner who wants to bring it back to life.
