I am waiting for parts like Carlgrover, and not trying to steal his thread, but hesitate to start a nearly identical thread. This question might help him (and others), what is the trick or technique to 1) remove the 5th gear seal (the wedding ring sized seal). Reading other threads, that seal seems to be the one that gives people a challenge when removing.

Also, the manual says to remove sprocket/pulley, just apply brake and remove the nut. Based on what I have been reading, it sounds like this method may not work, so other than buying the sprocket holding tool, I guess the next option would be to remove the transmission top cover, shifter drum and lock a couple gears together?

My project is a little more involved, as I am actually replacing the inner primary with another due to a crack in the casting (discovered the crack after I bought the bike 4 or 5 years ago). The silicone sealer has held all this time.

Planned on just replacing the inner primary, bearing and seal, but after doing some reading, decided to replace all seals (and belt) back there...YD

Yes you can put the trans into 2 gears and it will lock.. I've always stood on the rear brake to loosen the nut and also to torque everything back down.. I don't like the idea of wedging a block into the chain and gears...

Thanks, will try the brake method first then go from there...

Anybody have any tips on that seal removal?

Also, from the looks of pics I have found here and on the net, the replacement seal is installed slightly recessed? If so, any ideas on how deep? Thanks again, YD

You talking about the deal Between 5th and the input shaft? Use a pic.. if you have the help on a friend or wife, they can stand on the rear brake to make it easier..

Yes, the seal you mention is what I am referring to. There is one YouTube video where the guy uses a dental pick type tool, but he seemed to struggle with it and I worry about scratching the shaft. I will see if I can find a pic/link.

Pay close attention to your chain tension on the primary before you take everything apart, if it's too tight it could have been the reason the seal leaked..

Before you get to that seal you want to replace, the inner primary race has to be removed. There is a special tool for it just like there is a special tool for locking the sprocket. I bought them both, cried, but only cried once. There is also a special tool for sliding the seals onto the transmission main shaft so the lip won't get damaged going over the threads. Then there's the special tool for driving the seals on the transmission to the correct depth. While you're in there, replace the shifter seal as well. Oh, there's a special tool for driving in the new seal to the correct depth.

I had a heck of a time removing one seal, probably the one you need to remove. I think what I did was very gently and carefully, I tapped around the OD of the seal (the metal part) and deformed it until I got all the way around. That will make it lose much of it's holding power. Now take a pair of needle nose pliers and carefully pry it out. Take your time.
