I recently purchased am 1990 fxr and was checking everything to get it inspected. I am having turn signals issues. I purchased a haynes repair manual but it does not have a wiring diagram for this model. Can anyone with a diagram attatch one so I can clean up this mess. Thanks in advance if you can help. I will order a more specific manual asap.
Maybe if you just described your issues? I think the wiring is pretty straightforward. By the way, the signals are non-cancelling (you have to hold the button down), just in case that's your question.
First, thank you rude dog for your response and help. Weasel, If you get a chance to check this out again my issues are: When I hit either turn signal all the lights flash at once. by all I mean both turn signals front and back as well as the headlight and taillight. I have double wedge lights in the front and I replaced led's in the rear with standard bulbs so I wouldn't have to deal with equalizers. I opened up the front headlight and someone has obviously been in there as I see several wires black taped together. That's why I wanted the diagram to try to make heads or tails of it. Probably should just order a new light harness and see if that helps. Your thoughts if any greatly appreciated. thanks- Pirate
The headlight and taillight flash, too?? Is the voltage getting there through a ground? That's a lot deeper than your original post suggested. (you would be surprised how many people think that something is wrong because they have to hold the signal button down on those bikes)
Pirate, was there any resolution to your problem? If you have the wiring running into the headlight, most likely what happened is that someone replaced the stock turn signal module/relay unit. There is supposed to be a little metal cylinder looking thing in your headlight that provides the necessary resistance for the turn signals to flash properly. If someone before you had replaced the stock lights with LEDs, they may have removed and/or bypassed the module in favor of the load equalizers, etc...
I don't know the part number for what you need since I sold my FXR and all my manuals went with it, but that should point you in the right direction. For what it's worth, all your lights (headlight and taillight included) used to go through a single molex connector in the headlight and the module was inline with that molex.
Oh, if you've got a buddy with a Sportster, you can look in his headlight, if he's got the narrow glide front end with the headlight attached to a shroud mounted to the top triple tree. It's the exact same configuration as an FXR.
