Default Why is CV carb float bowl overflow dumping fuel.

Did the float come lose in the bowl or is the inlet valve have blockage or is it just worn out or is there a common reason to dump just as much fuel on the ground as you burn? It just started today.. grr. I’ve basically accepted I’m going to be digging into it at this point. I did pull the air cleaner, filter and overflow line off the nipple and it is coming from the carb not the tank overflow.

any veteran evo mechanic experience is appreciated. Ride to love and live to ride my brothers and sisters.

Float not set right or problem between the needle and seat.
My bet is there is a problem between the needle and seat.
Get some Polishing compound repeat Polishing compound (not rubbing compound) and some q tips.
Take the carb apart and using the q tips and polishing compound clean the needle seat.
Take a look at the needle and see if you can see any problems with it.
If you do replace the needle.
Resemble the carb and enjoy.

Check you float needle and seat. That's normally it. A worn float needle or funk in between the needle and seat

So I got it tore down. I got the screws out of the float bowl. I got the interference pin out of the float. I pulled the float and valve and haven’t noticed anything visual... also the float is dry and not gas logged so it should float. Should I just get the valve and seat and give that a shot? Thanks a lot fellas

Float needle SEAT is not replaceable. Float needle is. The polishing compound (mothers mag wheel and aluminum polish) and q-tip will do nicely to cleaning up the seat. Just make sure you flush the residual polishing compound out with carb cleaner.

Replacing the float needle is a good idea if it has not been replaced in a while. The rubber tip is probably worn. You might get lucky and it could be just some dirt keeping it from seating properly... If the over flow started suddenly, it could be dirt. If it started a little here, a little there and progressively got worse, it's probably worn.

FYI, when you fuel lines go bad, they can start to crumble from the inside out, so if you fuel lines have a few years on them, consider replacing those as well.

Here is a replacement needle: https://cv-performance.com/float-fuel-valve-4-sided

There is also a 3 sided version and I don't know why. I guess some are 3 sided and some are 4 sided, so check yours. Regardless, the CVP website says to check your float height after replacement, as the length of the needle can be different. https://cv-performance.com/float-fuel-valve

Float height: https://cv-performance.com/harley_float_setting

This is a good deal right here: https://cv-performance.com/harley-cv...ewal-kit-92-06

If it were me, and I had it opened up and on the bench I would go with a new needle and seat

If float needle looks in very good condition I would use compressed air to blow backwards thru gas seat to make sure no foreign particles coming into gas supply to needle/seat. Assembly needle/float back in carb & put a hose back on carb gas inlet & lightly blow air into hose by mouth. Raise float up(if carb is upright) to see if air flow gets shut-off when needle is lighted seated into needle seat.

If air flow shuts off properly you may have removed particle/gunk that was preventing needle to seat properly. May want to re-assembly carb & see if problem fixed. Replacing old gas lines with proper gas/fuel rated lines also a very good ideal as has previously been mentioned.

I assume you seen gas coming out of fuel overfill vent on carb, plastic inlet elbow can sometimes crack also, brass elbow available to eliminate plastic elbow.

Ethanol gas will take it's toll on the needle and it's rubber seal.

^^^^ Yup.

Leaking happens, so I have made it a routine to shut the fuel off every time I'm stopped.

Absolutely! An old habit that I have retained.
