Default Idel at 4000 rpms

I have a 96 softail custom with 75,000 miles. I ran like a top until the other day. I put an S & S E on it 15 years ago. I was getting on the freeway to go to work and whikle shifting it stuck at 4000 rpms. I pulled of the road, shut it off. I restarted it but it idels at 4000 rpms. I can't get it to go down. I replaced the cable and re-adjusted everything numerous times but that didn't help. I did notice that even though it was ideling so fast that the accelerator plate was almost closed and gas was squirting out of the accelerator pump valve in front of the plate. Could the accelerator pump be stuck? Any ideas?

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. Sounds as if you should buy yourself a carb rebuild kit and service the poor thing. If fuel is pouring into the carb there is nothing you can do until that is stopped.

One thing I had happen to me once was that the thumb lock got screwed in while I was replacing the cables (damned if I know how) and I had a hell of a time adjusting the cables until I unlocked it.

OP could your thumb lock be holding pressure on the throttle cable?
