Hoping someone has some advice on this. I've got a '92 FXR and it won't shift into neutral when the bike is running and at a stop. Have to put a pretty large amount of pressure on the shifter from 1st, and it then just goes right to 2nd. Down from 2nd is easy, but goes right by neutral.
A few additional notes:
1. Can find neutral fine when the bike is off
2. Can also find neutral fine when the bike is running and moving
3. Just did a full service on the bike looking to address this - new trans/primary fluid, clutch adjusted - everything is to spec.
I can tell you that both my '96 Heritage Classic and my '82 Ironhead Sportster have always had this same issue since I've owned them. And I bought the Sportster brand new in '82.
I eventually figured out with both of them that I have to blip the throttle while shifting from 1st gear up into neutral, and it slips right in.
Maybe there's something I could adjust or fix to help with this, but my method has worked for me for years and it works every time. And it isn't getting any worse, so I've always thought it's just a "Harley thing".
I don't want to get into a battle about the best method and procedure, but what you need is a proper clutch adjustment.
Not just a cable adjustment, but a complete clutch adjustment.
It's easy, just follow the correct procedure for your bike.
If that doesn't fix it, then you have clutch parts that need replacement.
Again, very simple.

I agree....start with proper clutch adjustment at the unit. Then adjust the cable last. You shouldnt have to shut the bike off or even blip the throttle to find neutral.
How many miles and is it the original setup. Did this all start after the fluid change in the primary or was it an existing issue? What fluid are you using? Is the primary chain too tight? I would take a Dial indicator and measure the amount of movement at the clutch spring plate. That would give you an indication. You should have at minimum .068" of throw.. if not check adjustments and recheck..
That's doing extra effort to verify what is already known.
Just do a proper adjustment and be done.
Same goes for the guy that has to blip his throttle.
