All aftermarket tanks have the petcock in that position so I don't think you can use that to date a bike unless you know it's the stock tanks.
Good catch on the speedo cable...not sure how I missed that

The paint job and rear fender tells me something has changed.
Now wither he kept the original tins so he could put it back to stock later or just painted the stock tins I don't know and neither does anyone else except him and his painter.
FWIW I still have the original tanks with the OEM paint job on my shelf in the garage.

You might be right about the solenoid but everything I can find in Ronnies or other online microfiche tells me the new starter configuration started in 90.

That crossover in front of the downtubes isn't factory, is it?

No it's not but if the owner added a quick disconnect that is the only way to route it.

The modern starter configuration started in the 1989 model year (I have an `89 FLSTC, bought new in Jan of `89).

Look at the lever just in front of the oil tank, what year was that on...

I wonder what they changed then because 91-93 all have a complete starter with a part number of 51553-90A.
As you know the last 2 numbers of the part number are the year that part was introduced.
Then again the MOCO changed something in '94 because starting in '94 the last 2 numbers are 94.
I can't look up 89 or 90 because Ronnies only has sportsters for those years.

Looked like a reflection to me.
I've never seen a lever like that on any Harley I've looked at.
What was the lever for?

The changes involved the size of the starter jack shaft assemblies, the diameter of the hole for the starter jack shaft the inner primary cover changed over the years.

I`m thinking now... that is an `88 or earlier, because that lever looks like one of the mechanical starter lever set ups that some shovelhead guys use to replace the oem solenoid, look at the spot where the solenoid would go, there is a small square gizmo attached there...
