Short in harness
68,000 miles , have a short . Lights stay on when ignition is off ,previous owner cut cb harness . This may have been done power on . Is there a place to start. Had mechanic tell me ignition switch , changed no difference, then said it was ecm changed no difference. Please give me some advice on how to trouble shoot this .
Thanks
I'd GUESS that whoever cut the CB harness butchered up some other stuff. Pull the outer fairing, get a schematic and start tracing the wires starting at the light that is on.
The fuel pump kicks on when I plug the data cable in as well as lights on . I can see the do diligence of tracing the short. I will start tearing it down to locate troubled spot. Was riding , bike was fine data cable unplugged bike quit. When I found the plug unplugged I plugged it in that’s when the lights and fuel pump came on with ignition in off position. I noticed the plug was hanging off the ecm home position, I think previous owner probably unplugged it after riding . Bike runs fine alittle rich other than that it’s sweet.
Appreciate your response.
My "dream retirement" is to throw a multimeter in a saddlebag and ride around the country to try to help electrically-challenged people fix electrical problems on their bikes.
I'm no genius, but forty-four years of fixing computers and other electronic equipment for a living gives me somewhat of an advantage in figuring out what's going on when something electrical doesn't work .
Jmcc71961, good luck in figuring out this problem. You can do it with the right wiring diagram, perseverance, and help from knowledgeable people like Dr. Hess on this forum.

Some where the wire shorted to a constant hot or previous idiot connected it in the wrong place.
With the schematic you can find where the wires are supposed to go.
If they don`t, start working upstream toward the ignition switch.
If they stay on, pull the accessory fuse, then pull the ignition fuse.
When the lights go out, you will know which circuit the lights are hot wired to.
