but because i know that the voltage regulator has some sort of problem due to the back of it being melted, so i a) know that the stator is producing output, although it could be producing too much due to the fact that it melted the voltage regulator ( or the voltage regulator could have just went bad, it does have 33,000 miles on it) and i know that b) if it is overcharging i need to know if the problem is located at the stator or if its the regulator.
i dont know the ranges of acceptable output for the stator, and i would like to start there knowing that if that is the problem and it is producing too much current i would rather not put on the new regulator until i have found out this first, because it doesnt make sense to me to put on a new regulator without checking to make sure my stator wont fry this one too or if its just that the regulator had its ordeal due to regular use of 33,000 miles....

You should be using the AC scale for testing your out put of the alternator (stator) and you should use a tach and set RPM to 2000. At that point you should read 33 volts AC. There is a sticky here at the top of the Evo Section that will guide through the whole test.. I suggest you follow it... Also I would as THC said test the DC volts output from the regulator to the battery.. it's more important to know what your regulator is putting out as long as the stator out put is at least 33 volts AC..

There's a "sticky" thread at the top of this forum by Dr Hess with step by step instructions on fully diagnosing your charging system.

Thank you for all your help.
Im not going to install a tach just for this though. This would be the only purpose for it and I'm not going through the trouble of buying and installing and mounting it for this.
My stator tested fine at the battery. Battery is fine. Already have the voltage regulator so im going to replace that at the same time I replace the cam position sensor. And if the speedometer keeps acting up I'll change the sensor at a later date.
Thanks guys.
