Default Speedometer problem

I have a 2000 ultra, while riding the speedometer does not give accurate reading (shows maybe 50 mph no matter how hard you get on it). This problem has accured twice. The odometer still counts miles. Problem goes away after restarting bike. No codes on bike, Any ideas?
