Default Speedometer acting up!!

Lately my speedometer has been acting funny. Occasionally it will read about 60% of actual speed (30 at 50). This morning for the first time it was reading 85 while doing 55. I have a gps, so it really isn't too bad when it happens. It will not go away until I stop, shut down and restart. Then it's back to normal.

I replaced the speed sensor last year when it failed, so that is relatively new. I pulled the sensor and cleaned it just now,and it had only a tinybit ofmetalbuild upon it.

Anyone experienced this or have any thoughts on the cause? --- Tom

The only speedo issue I am having is that, at times, the needle bounces all over the place.

I don't know if my speedo is broke or it is the sending unit. Mine lights up, can change from Od to trip Od but get no MPH and to Od reading never changes.

Don't use the speedometer, it is wrong anyway (~3mph). I just use the GPS.....

I experienced the same problem on my Dyna, I found that if I started the engine before the engine light in the Tachometer shut off it would read the wrong speed, you might check to see if the same thing is happening to your bike.

I think my bike's speedo is about 2-3 mph slower than the speed shown on my GPS. So if my speedo says 65, I reckon I'm only doing about 62 or 63, really.

That definately sounds like the speed sensor. That's what mine did plus the turn signals would not cancel. I changed the speed sensor and the problem was fixed.

Is there a way to test the sensor with an ohm meter while on the bike? And how do locate it? Just trace the wires?
