Default Cover assembly w/ springs

How can you tell when the COVER ASSEMBLY W/ SPRINGS goes bad?
Part number 40384-91.
'95 Heritage
Yesterday I was out riding and I heard a pop and then a bunch of rattling coming out of the primary or at least that's what it sounded like.
I opened her up this morning and I can't see anything wrong.

Any ideas?

while I have never had a bad compensator, I suspect you would Always hear it when you take off from a stop
you should hear them when a fairly powerfull engine is hooked to the rodeo pulling sled!!

The compensator looks fine a little witnessing from the sliding cam but nothing serious.
The part I'm talking about goes just under the bolt and outside of the compensator.

Yeah that's my guess but I can't see anything visually wrong with it.
I hate throwing parts at a problem but not sure what else I can do in this case.

Start with "does it make a racket when you take off"??
yes- probably spring broken
no- probably something else

I'll take a good look at the clutch pack but I don't think that's it.

To check the compensating spring pack, on the bike. With the primary exposed, lock the drive train at the clutch so there is no rotation.
Take a suitable fitting wrench, with leverage. Place it on the compensating assembly bolt.
Now your going to watch the compensator, where the three fingers cam. As you rotate that bolt from stop, to stop. Rotational wise.
Should be limited travel.
Yes they do go south. Spring fatigue.

Those compensators and basically concave washers (spring steel) opposite facing each other. They can get weak but rarely totally fail. It's more of a knock than a rattle. When you back off the nut, it's only about 1.5 - 2 rounds till all the pressure is off the outer cam half. Normally, the cams generally "climb" about 2/3 or a tick more from bottom of the valley to top of a tooth.
Does your clutch pack still have the center spring plate? Sometimes they will come apart but not give bad clutch symptoms till some time later. Just a thought.
