I've been taking late afternoon rides on the softail. A safety thing bugging me are the rear shocks. If i'm not paying attention to every little nuance in the road sometimes those quick dips in the road will sneak up on me and it jars the hell out of my spine.
knowing these existing shocks are over 25 years old, I'm thinking of getting a new set of OEM shocks. The web pages show that the HD comfort flex for softails DOES NOT fit my bike, but Having 4 Harleys the last ten years I've found that the fitmit guide put out by Harley is usually BS.
Those does not appear, from the picture, to fit the Evo era softails. They look like the twinkie era softail shocks. If I did it correctly, this picture is of the progressive Evo era softail shocks. The end pieces on the one side are different, has something to do with how they mount. Hope someone can chime in with the technical explanation.
Jim is correct. First pic is later model bikes, second that he posted is Evo style. If you really want/need to take the pain and unexpected spine jarring out of a ride, get a good oem spring seat set up. Good bye back issues.
The shocks could be just plane old worn out. The one thing I didn't like about the ohm ones are that the seal is forward and makes it easier for dirt and grime to get in there. The Progressives have the seal in the rear which is good. But they are very pricey and ride a lot stiffer than OEM. I've had them and could not get a comfortable ride out of them unless my wife was with me. Solo they were too stiff but I'm only 160lbs. I went back to OEM's..

Not sure if you got your shock situation sorted out yet but Mid-Usa has some Progressive type shocks for much cheaper than Progressive.
Years ago I wanted to try those shocks but they were out of them.. They weren't even manufacturing them for a while... I guess they're back on the market now. I always wanted to try them.. They look pretty decent and I like the fact that they're smaller diameter so when you put your lift underneath the frame you're not lifting on the shocks...

I've never lifted a softail by putting a leg of the jack on the shocks no matter what shocks are on it.
