So last year I picked up an 87 flhs for $3400. At the time.i didn't think it was too bad of a price. Her is "cocotte" the day I picked her up.
First few things I noticed that where wrong was the radio did get any service, I didnt like seat, bike felt floaty, needed some more leg room oil pressure gauge and volt gauge do not work and it needed different bars.
First thing I did was find an old cassette adapter so I could see if the radio worked at all. Turns out the radio works. Big plus. Go out to dinner and the keeps cutting out. Pretty much just played at an idle. Frustrating. So no radio rest of the weekend. Finally get home and start taking about the front ferring to see what I can find. Holy rats nest of wiring. So I start cleaning up the mess a little. Get to the radio and find the antenna wire is cut and both connectors have male end connections that didnt really connect. So cut out the old connections and installed new. Tape plays all the time now u less it feels like flipping sides. Pictures not the greatest had a light shining on the wiring so I could see better.
Couple weekends later I was over at one of the ol lady's friends place. So while the ladies hung out the guys went and looked at bikes. He showed me "ginger" 14 road glide. While hanging out in his garage I noticed a seat and some highway pegs sitting around his garage. So we struck a deal and they became mine. Went to put the seat on and the one of the previous owners bolted the seat to the rear fender. So that was a no go, but we did get the highway pegs on. Which I used on the way back home and I could comfortable stretch out my legs. Get home jack the bike up and unbolt the seat. Well the seat that was on there was a reach seat. I'm a lanky 6' 3" so that didnt work for me lol. Got a 1/4-20 insert from work, drilled out the hole a little bit and installed the insert. Now it's like factory. New seat is a lot more comfortable
Got it all cleaned and polished
I got about 1500 miles on it last year. But I got tired of the dumping and the base gaskets leaky pretty badly. So then it sat in the garage all winter. Had to wait for warmer weather to start working on it.
I did forget to mention that I removed the slip ons. Which the right side muffler was hollowed out and then left side still had half the baffling in. I put on some rhineharts I picked up for another project that got put on hold. These have a 2" inlet so an adapter from 1.75" to 2" was used to install slip ons
So now that it's getting back to being warmer, Im starting.to tear it down. Removed the heat shields and see crappy welds that leak and look terrible.
so I picked up some 09-13 Vance and hines dual baggers with some moto jackpot slip ons up. We will see if they with and how the crossover pipe fits with the oil filter there. They should be here next week.
I picked up a tour pack off from a 2010 in suede black with hog tune speakers over the winter. Last monday I recieved the quick detach and mount for a 98-06 I believe.Got home from work and started to get everything installed. Took the chrome tail frame cover bracket off and what do you know one of the previous owners cut the tail frame about 4 " after the shock mount. It's a good thing no one was around at that time. Remove the other side to find the same thing. Acrew it I'm going to install everything anyways. Got everything mounted up and tried it out. It all works!!!! Now I know I need to weld the frame back together and get everything aligned but atleast I know it all fits. Had to drill new holes in the tour pack but that's not hard at all.
Compression is 119 on the front and 115 in the rear. I'm hoping that after freshing up the top it goes up. I have 18" el diablo bars coming from demons cycle. We will see how that turns out. So far not that happy with them. I ordered on the 16th of april and they just got picked up today. I contacted them for a tracking number and it shows that FedEx picked them up today. Who knows if the covid crap has anything to do with that but that's pretty much a week right there and there are expecting delivery on monday. I'm going.to pull motor, trans, and primary out of the frame so I can paint them. Primary is getting a new gasket kit since I'm missing a chunk on the outer gasket. I did notice a little slippage under hard acceleration last year so I will also be changing out clutch disc. I was told that the 2nd previous owner had motor work done. But with the orange gasket crap I found on the rear exhaust and looks like it's on the base gaskets I'm a little worried about that. Inner cam bearing will be getting changed and an Andrew's ev13 cam will be going in. The check ball and spring in the oil pump will also be getting replaced since it dumps in less then 2 weeks. I can understand if it did it in the spring after sitting for 5 months for winter but not less then 2 weeks. Motor mounts will also be replaced. Doesnt pay not to since everything will be out.
Hi Rodger, 1990 FLHS here, owned from new. Good looking bike you have there, although more like an FLHT from what I can see - what the difference a letter can make! The FLHS had no batwing, although that could have been retrofitted. Look forward to seeing how you make progress!

By the joe bob style wiring I found they were not very good at it lol. But by the time I'm done it should be a lot nicer. I have been thinking about updating the radio and handle bar controls but that's a down the road thought.
