Default service manual for 1985 FLHTC

Just bought a 1985 FLHTC and need to get the wiring sorted out to pass our state inspection.

Can I get a herley factory service manual? Will the clymer or haynes manuals get me the wiring diagrams I need.

Thanks all

Most folks here (including me) will suggest the only manual to use is the Harley Davidson Service Manual.

It will have the correct wiring diagrams for your bike.

The aftermarket manuals, Clymers, Haynes etc, tend to be very generic, especially in the wiring.

You should be able to find one through a Harley Davidson dealer, but be ready for sticker shock, they cost about $140 these days.

Tell us what the issue is on your bike, maybe we can help you while you search for that service manual...

Need to sort out the Horn circuit.

I have the turn signals working now but I have broken wires in the 12 pin connector for the lights that I want to fix.

You can still get the pins and sockets that go into the connector, from the dealer, or aftermarket, they are AMP Mate n Loc.
You can also get the plastic connectors.

The horn is powered by the accessory circuit.

What condition is the electrical wiring in? Do you have a horn, is the wire still there?

Horn was removed by the PO. I am going to order one and the mounting hardware.

I assume the wiring is there for it...Does the horn button operate a horn relay or the horn directly.

I also have an issue with the brake light being on...think its the switch in the front brake lever...

The bike came out of georgia. they have no vehicle inspection there. the PO ran it asa rat bike, so little to no maint done.

The horn switch in the left hand control gets power from the accessory circuit.

The switch sends power directly to the horn, there is no relay.

The accessory circuit wire is orange.

The wire going to the horn is black (I think), but the factory has changed the color of the horn wire a zillion times for some reason.

Find the rear brake light switch, it is at the rear master cylinder, disconnect the wires, if the light remains on you know the front switch is the culprit.

The front switches get damaged when guys install them without using a protector over the plunger, as explained in the service manual.

When the plunger is extended out from the switch, the light comes on, when plunger pushed in, the light goes out.

If you find that the front brake light switch is trashed, let me know, I have an OEM switch (71590-92) I will send to you for shipping cost, I bought it many years ago but never used it.
