I have posted this already but was told to post in the evo section in hopes of more help! Any advice would be much appreciated!
I dont know if this is the right section or not but I have a 1990 fxstc that just started cutting out at 65+. I can go under 65 and itll run fine but once I go over it, it stumbles and if I pull in the clutch it will just die. Pulled the carb and it was clean, out new plugs in it (but the old ones looked good, not running lean or rich), checked all my connections (battery, coil, harness). Im lost on what to do next. Please help!
Heres a little about the bike, about four years ago I rebuilt the top end. Put wiesco 10:1 high compression pistons, high lift valve springs, ev59 cam, dynatek 2000i ignition, single fire coil, plug wires, thunderheader exhaust, I rejetted the carb to accommodate everything. This year I put a new battery in it. It ran great for a couple years then sat for a year and a half. I just started riding it this year again and it ran fine the first 40 miles. Is it possible that the stator is causing any issues? Im gunna do some tests on it today that I found.
My dad bought the bike slightly used in 1990 and gave it to me when I was 16. So I know exactly everything that has been done to it.
Fuel flow is my guess. Things to check, fuel filter, petcock screen and your gas caps. Caps are easy to test, just loosen one up and try to go over 65, it is work you got a bad vent in he cap.
Not the stator. I'm GUESSING a gunked up main jet.
the main jets clean. I pulled the carb and it was very clean. All jets where free of anything.

I pulled the petcock and it was a lot of crud on the screen. I cleaned it all and that did help. But it still does it. Last night I ran and got more fuel hose to just pull out the in-line fuel filter. I tried loosening the gas caps and it didnt really help much. But what I did notice was when I was draining the tank, the flow wasnt steady, it would be a heavy trickle then flow to a solid stream bit a bit then back to a heavy trickle. All gas caps on or off didnt change it. I took the petcock apart and it was clean. Any idea as to why it might be doin that? I already ordered a high flow petcock for it in hopes that will help. Its the original petcock now.
A fuel flow test should get at least 8oz. In 10 seconds.. If you have the original vacuum operated petcock, I imagine it's not opening all the way or the diaphragm itself is starting to go.. A new petcock sounds like it might solve your problem. What carburetor do you have on there and did you check the float level?

well maybe it isnt the original petcock because its not vacuum operated. Its the keihin harley carb and the petcock is a keihin as well. Which is why I thought it was The original. Ill be honest I didnt know you check your float level? I thought it was your float is free and not sticking then youre good.
(well I just figured out how to adjust the float and will do that this evening)

leave out the inline filter and try again.
Personally I don't care for those things.
I hope you got a Pingle!!!!!
