Default Energy 1 extra plate kit with + 15% spring - plus "ez boy" type clutch assist kit?

Hey all,

Just wanting to pick the brains of the good folks here. I have a 1996 heritage with mild performance upgrades and am installing the extra plate clutch kit and 15% stronger diaphragm spring.

I was also intending to install one of those ez boy / clutch lite kits that reduce lever pull effort.

I've read through literally hundreds of posts of people using these things all ranging from, worked really well to no real difference to caused all sorts of clutch adjustment and drag problems that I'm not sure which way is up?

Can anyone please shed any light on whether these cheap kits are any good.... and tricks or any tips when it comes to installation that will make them work properly? Shorter clutch cable spacer? Grinding extra clearanceinside the case?

Thanks for any advise, and yes I know that the mueller power clutch would probably be a better option, but too much $$ at this point. So looking at simpler less expensive options first. Cheers

There's a lot of truth in the old saying you get what you pay for.

The most common problem one encounters when doing these is clutch drag because they can't get enough adjustment to fully release the clutch. The easy pull ramps sacrifice throw for ease of pull. And a heavier spring adds to the problem. I have personally installed a Barnett Extra Plate kit in my wifes Evo with a Easy Pull with zero problems. Energy 1 is very similar to Barnett. I installed a Energy 1 in my Twin Cam 88B and had the drag problem with an Easy Pull Ramp but solved it by replacing the steel ***** in the ramp with 10mm sized ones. Others have done the same.

Thanks, I appreciate you sharing your experience.
Can you tell me a little more about the different size ball bearings? Where you got them, and any other mods you did to make this all work together?

Thanks.

Yes, absolutely.
Just I have heard of guys making adjustments and modifications to these ezy boy kits to make them actually work given their not so great design and their limitations etc.
Thanks

Ran the same Energy 1 system for 7 years without a EZ pull system, the clutch can hold 100+ hp. Don't know anything about the EZ pull but can vouch for a new Barnett clutch cable taking quite a bit of drag off the pull.

Thanks 1997bagger, Yes I haves a new Barnett cable ready to go on as well. 👍
I may not even need the ez pull device, even with my painful left hand.

Basically it was just that extra little bit that gave me the extra little bit to release fully. I bought a package of them from Mcmaster Carr for just under $6.00. The stock ***** measure .375" and the 10mm measure. 394". I can't feel a difference in the working of the clutch and it was a lot less money than having a longer pushrod made.

Looks like I have an 18* ramp already in there (don't know if that's stock or not) and seems like some knuckleheads have been wrenching in the primary side by the looks of the gouges in the sides of the case.

Don't know what the gouges could be from. Maybe former owner tried to pull the case without removing the center screws? Or dropped something inside and went fishing.
As for the 18⁰ ramp, that's stock. A 21⁰ ramp would be an easy pull. The degree reading is for the angle of the cut outs the ***** ride in. More angle = lighter pull.
