Default 99 Heritage Evo, starter jackshaft question

Put a new all ***** starter clutch in the starter, Pn 79-2101, for 91-07 big twin. Put in all back together, put the spacer on the starter shaft in the right direction, bolted the starter into the inner primary.
No matter how I turn the jackshaft, it just doesn't seat all the way. When I tighten the long screw in all the way the starter gear still engages the ring gear by about 1/8 inch. According to my Harley manual it's all assembled correctly, I think I'm just tired and missing something. Anybody care to enlighten me?

Are you sure the coupling #47 in the diagram part number 60647-94 isn't in backwards.. Very simple and common mistake.. it's been a long time since I had one apart but can't 31 installed backwards do the same thing?

Thanks for the advice. I pulled the starter back out to double check the coupler and had the jackshaft apart several times and checked everything. That was all done right the first time. Started thinking about the newer style double lip jackshaft seal in the inner primary. Web research showed me that I had installed it backwards and the open side of the seal should go to the clutch side with the extra lip towards the starter. The extra lip on the seal being on the wrong side wouldn't let the jackshaft seat all the way. Been a couple years since I did one and didnt have this prob then, just had a brain fart I guess. Riding soon.....
