more starter woes

I'm installing an electric foot on a basket 82 Shovel. I bought a ring gear and welded it to the clutch hub. All the electrical stuff seems to work OK but when I hit the starter button, the starter stays engaged. It doesn't stay engaged when the starter motor cable is not hooked up. Is there a right way and a wrong way to put that ring gear on? I've read a recent post with similar problems but I don't think it's electrical

Make sure your solenoid is properly shimmed on the inner primary. Misalignment of the solenoid will cause things to bind up.
