Sweet bike.

Have you put it on a dyno? What kind of numbers are you getting from your current setup?

I had it setup for Dyno run last year, guy who is top dog around these parts, Mobile Dynamometer, is a very long time friend of mine, had me on the rack and did a few adjustments and told me to do a few things to it before he puts his magic on it, so I did, and just waiting for weather to break, as he won't do any Dyno tuning untill it's a steady 60 degrees or above. Brand new that bikes top speed was 92mph, I've had her over 120 and still had excitable throttle left. Want to go bigger cam, primary changeover, add 6 speed, and maybe eventually Big bore, but for now, at 33 years old, she'll hang and then some

The starter comments are a good suggestion since you plan on keeping this bike. However, I didn't see anything about the battery rating or age etc. Be sure your battery is fully charged and has as many amps as you can find too. But even that will only help so much with your current starter.

As far as getting more power out of an 80 inch EVO, going with a "bigger" cam will likely kill your bottom end performance in an effort to get more . The EV27 closes the intake valves at 36 degrees with 235 duration, which helps with the low end but will also pull through about 5800 rpm. So what you have now sounds like a good setup that is dependable too.

I'd go with a Hitachi starter. (I had them on my 95 & 96 evo's.) Very robust.
Throw away that junk battery and get an Anti-Gravity w/restart.
Lastly, your alternator puts out 28 amps. Remember this when running your radio at 400W... You're running a deficit.

Battery is 325cca, keep it on maintain always, and I'm actually thinking of going bigger cam, SE or S&S 527

actually upon rebuild we did a stator upgrade, 32amp now, plus regulator and she definitely charges. But yes even though I have a decent battery, I do need an anti gravity one, as I'm sure the vibration takes its toll on mine

I have been very favorably impressed with the Anti Gravity batteries. I've installed them in five bikes so far.
If you have not held one yet you will be surprised at how little they weigh.
The oldest one must be four or five years old now. The bike is presently not running but in a month or so I should find out if the battery is still good.
The owner said he kept it on the charger when not in use. The bike sat around a lot. I am curious to see if it's still good.

My 76 shovel had a Hitachi starter and yes they crank slow so what I did was I bought a Hi Torque Prestolite and Drilled and tapped the starter housing to accept the 1/4-20 starter bolts and the motor spun a lot faster.. Just so you know the starter in your 88 was used since 73 so you shouldn't have any issues doing the swap. Ebay has them pretty cheap. No need to go through the expense of an inner and outer primary..

Not sure I quite follow you on the housing bolt thing? How does that work, or better yet, can you explain a little further as I've not heard that before. I currently run an All ***** and it still is seemingly sluggish to crank at first so I'm really interested in this solution. Thanks in advance!
