Default No start

1997 FXDL. Interment problem.
Starter button - faint click and then starts after a few tries.
NOW Starter button - nothing and few tries later starts.
Battery is new and checks good. Before I dig into the handlebar switch, is there any I can check? I suspect a bad ground or a bad switch.
ROT here in Austin and would hate to get stranded.
Thanks in advance. TP

Have you checked the relay? This is just the reason I have a fail safe starter button on all my bikes. I've been stranded just because of crap like this. Never again.

Have you tried to jump from the spade terminal to the bolt with the ignition "on" ? Does the starter spin over ?

If everything is working normally, when you turn the ignition switch on, and the run/stop switch is set to "run", it will send power to the start switch on your handlebars.

When you press that start switch, it will send power to the input of the start relay.

The start relay will in turn send power to the input of the starter solenoid.

The starter solenoid will in turn send massive amounts of power to the starter motor to turn the motor over so it can start.

If you have a volt meter and know where your start relay and starter solenoid are, you can find where the power stops and where the problem is.

Read the voltage (when starter button is pressed) at the wire that runs between the starter relay and the starter solenoid.

Don`t disconnect the wire, the circuit must be under load.

On some bikes there is no easy way to do this with the wire connected, if so you can make up a jumper wire with an exposed terminal that you can connect to the voltmeter.
