Only tapered mainshaft models require a special puller, 1989 and earlier.
Not so, At one point it was recommended to use red loctite on the splines to adhere the basket to shaft, which made it difficult to pull the basket... Therefore requiring a three finger puller.. The biggest issue was that there was too much clearance between the clutch hub and shaft requiring the red loctite.. if not used the splines on the inner hub we're breaking...
Whelp, after all that, looks like I'm an idiot. When I first got the bike, i had a local shop change the stator. this was when I was young and (more) foolish and was afraid of going into a primary. When he did the job he told me the inner primary was covered and I would need seals. So I cleaned the hell out of it (three cans of brake cleaners worth) and rode it. No leaks for months. Now that they are back, I automatically assumed it was the same leak. So I took a closer leak and now see the rear cylinder base gasket is weeping, and the oil was running (not really running, more like crawling) down the primary side and that's what is causing the drips.
So just to be 100% sure, I'm going to degrease the hell out of it and this time watch the suspect area to see if it is simply the base gasket.
If it is, my project just went from a PITA repair, to a fun, "let's add some new jugs and pistons" job...
