Clutch Question
97 FLHTCUI
This past summer I had to adjust the center bolt in the clutch twice.
The problem was slack at the clutch lever, and also getting hard to shift into first gear.
The clutch cable is adjusted out/long as much as can be there is no adjustment left there.
Bike does not seem to be suffering from clutch slipping symptoms.
So I'm wondering what the problem could be, only things I can think of are worn plates or stretched cable.
So before I start tearing things apart thought I'd ask if anyone had any other ideas, about things I might check?
Thanks

Yep, would dare to guess that the spring plate is coming apart, and just a matter of time until it takes out the clutch basket parts as well.

If the rest of the clutch discs and plates are fine, then spring plate is around $50, but since it a know fail part, better to just replace the clutch with an extra disc clutch, that does not use the spring plate in the first place.

Ok I'll have a look see.
I'll have to see what I can find about the throw out bearing, that's a new one to me.

You might inspect the primary drain plug to see how much you have in the way of shavings. There's always going to be some nasty around it but I think if your clutch plate steels are wearing you'll see an excessive amount of shiny particles. Are you following the procedure exactly from the manual? I have basically the same bike and if I don't follow it to the letter I've been known to get is messed up.

As other have said, check the spring plate. I was having similar symptoms, then it was getting hard to get into gear. The brass rivets in the spring plate were breaking down, luckily I caught it before they scored the basket. I replaced with the HD heavy duty Police clutch pack (no spring plate) and all has been well. Barnett also make some options.
