As other have said, check the spring plate. I was having similar symptoms, then it was getting hard to get into gear. The brass rivets in the spring plate were breaking down, luckily I caught it before they scored the basket. I replaced with the HD heavy duty Police clutch pack (no spring plate) and all has been well. Barnett also make some options.
Might want to upgrade to a better clutch pack while your in their.. Barnett is very affordable.. This way if you ever do engine mods on your "HEAVY" bike you know the clutch will handle it... I also like the SE spring...

The Police clutch from the Motor Company is pretty heavy duty with the heavy spring.

I can't seem to find what you describe as the (MoCo) Police clutch in any books I have or anywhere online. Found some aftermarket that claim to be, that are simply kevlar discs. Do you by chance have a part number or remember anything more about it? Just curious, thanks.

After my spring plate self destructed, I went to my local dealer and talked to the old school parts guy (one that actually new about Harley's) he sold me a clutch kit that he said is used in all of the police bikes and had no spring plate. I don't think I still have the box or info on it. I can tell you that the clutch spring will give you a work out in traffic.
