Just started up my 96 roadking for the first time after top end rebuild.Relpaced pistons, rings, had the barrels bored 5 thou over, andrews ev27 cam,new oem lifters, repl cam bearing, new oem breather gear and pinion gear.Local shop fitted the rings with the barrels and measured the cam and pinion gear fit and also cleaned up the valves.I used the stock pushrods.I took my time during assembly and i think i got everything right.Started it up in the garage today and she fired right up first time but the top end is quite a bit noisier than before.Pretty "clacky" if you know what i mean.Sounds almost like somthing isnt lubricated.I couldnt ride it due to rain.No oil leaks.I ran it for about 5 minutes, idles nicely. Just loud.Just wondering is this normal untill the new parts mate with each other ???Should i be concerned and be checking further?thks
Your lifters probably need to pump up, if you didn't soak them first. I have an EV-27 in my FLHT with stock pushrods and it was a but noisy at first too.
Had the same thing when I did my top end. Took about 10 mins (seemed like forever) of riding before all of them stopped making noise. Some pumped up faster than others.
Also took about 10 guys on this forum to talk me off the ledge and convince me to take it out for a ride to pump them up.
When on the bike riding, all the noise seemed to be coming from the left side even though the noise sounded like on the right side while running in the garage. Good luck

Took it out for ride this afternoon and things quietend right down.whew! There is a bit of a cam / pinion gear whine that ive read might ease up some as time goes by& I may have to tweek the carb a bit ( s&s super e.) but all is well.thks
Never should let it just idle for 5 minutes with new rings.. Your decreasing the chance of a good seat. Best thing is to take it out and load the motor up to 3,000 RPM.. keep a load on the motor and don't keep the rpm's steady..
