Default Evo pinging

Odd circumstance I’m hoping one of you guys can offer advice on. Bought a 1997 Electra glide a few year’s ago. The bike has the MM fuel injection with a power commander III installed. I have SOME paperwork on it, there is an S&S “sidewinder” 96” big bore in it, including the S&S crankshaft and pistons/jugs. Unknown cam, stock heads with unknown (or maybe none) work done to them. The bike ran GREAT the first year, no issues I loved it. Last year about this time I got it out of storage and noticed pinging under load and the occasional back fire on trailing throttle decel. I changed nothing about it over the winter. Pinging continued through the riding season, I’m about to get it out of storage again. I’m wondering what could cause detonation if I changed nothing about the bike…

Assuming you are running a top tier/high octane fuel in it, so maybe new plugs and see how that works. If you're keeping the RM's above 2500-2800, you should be fine unless you start pulling a grade.

Maybe a rip to a good tuner who deals with e Power Commander and let them look at the map for that setup.

I would start with a fuel pressure check, and verify no intake leak.

Pressure and flow rate, since a fuel filter that is staring to clog up, may give you a good static pressure check at the bunge, but bottom will drop out as it's trying to flow fuel at that pressure.
Also, double check the system on the return side as well, since could be problem in the pressure regulator causing problem too.

Ok I’ll put plugs and fuel pressure/flow on my list to check. Regarding the fuel filter, loos like that is an obsolete part or at least Surdyke’s website shows nothing. Part #61343-95.
Which aftermarket filter is the best?

1st thing I'd do is check your error codes to see if you have an error code indicating what the problem is. With that said, I had something similar happen to my Road King. I checked the error codes and found that the front cylinder was cutting out, ended up being the spark plug cable for the front cylinder had worn through under the gas tank. and was only running on one cylinder under full throttle causing it to ping. I changed the spark plug cables and it eliminated the problem.

The 1997 Touring fuel injection is M & M fuel injection.
A rather simple system.
It reads as if bike had work done BUT it was running well until it was pulled out of STORAGE last time.
Based on information provided, it reads as if fuel or air has changed from before storage.
In 1997 the M & M fuel injection had TWO exterior fuel lines under the tank.
Those lines can leak at the swivel or fall apart internally but the Good Ridge HD-FL005 are a good replacement.
The interior tank liner can release and block fuel filter sock too.
The manifold seals (2) and cost about $10 total can leak and allow unmeasured air to enter too.

Haven’t tried to fire it up yet but I did remove the plugs. Oddly the rear one looks wet, bought new plugs to install. I’ve got a nice list to go over now, thanks. Already have the factory service and parts manual. I’ll keep this updated as I have time to look the bike over.

Any ideas on a fuel filter replacement if needed?

Been running one of these in my 97 RK for years without problems, as well as Quantum fuel pumps and pressure regulator.
Note on the Quantum fuel pump, it's shorter than the HD unit, but if you use parts off the stock unit to shim/hold the new one down on the factory bracket, works fine.

https://www.jpcycles.com/product/166...uel-filter-kit

Note, double check on prices, but you can pick up a new filter, fuel pump, pressure regulator, and even tank cork bunge gasket "kit" for under $100 as a combine kit.

And double check your intake manifold rubber gaskets to the heads. If they are older then three years old, they have heat dried out and allowing air to leak past them to cause the motor to run lean. The dead give away that they are leaking, is back fire during decel that was not a problem before.

Myself, they get changed out every three years like clockwork, even with lubing the hell out of them with silicone grease during the install to slow the rubber from drying out in the first place.

Couple of tidbits:

1. Look down in your tank with a flashlight and see if there is anything flapping around (that would be your tank liner). Move the bike around a little to make it easier to see.

2. Replace your cork tank gasket and those 22 screws when you put in the new fuel pump and filter.

3. Check the "Y" crossover tube on your exhaust. They sometimes crack and cause a leak. This can be your decel popping.
