Default Evo starter

Hi I'm new to this forum and I'm wondering if someone can solve my problem. I have a 1988 FSXTC with a 1605cc S&S engine it runs great but the problem I am having is starting it. When I press the start button the starter struggles to turn the engine.
I have to press the start button several times until the pistons are over TDC and then it turns the engine ok and fires up. The thing i am worried about is burning the starter or wiring out. I have fitted a new battery but still the same. Is there a more heavy duty starter I can fit?
Thanks

1605 cc V-twin ? That's a big Evo, are the compression releases ? Are they working ?

I guess it's a 98" - smaller than I was thinking. Sometimes just bumping the starter button then full on hold the start button will help. My 80" used to do that now I have to jump the starter to make it go 90% of the time.

If the starter solenoid will accept it install a push button.

If you're still running the 1988 style starter, primary and clutch setup, there's only one option for more starter power - All ***** starter. They are expensive and I'd highly recommend a new solenoid and new (heavier) battery cables. That stater pulls a LOT more amps, even under a no load condition and is known to fry things that aren't in perfect condition. And, they are a different length, so if yours has the end brace that bolts to the transmission, that will be eliminated.

If yours still has the original starter, you might consider simply replacing the starter motor. They tend to get weak after this many years to the point they'll act the same with a stock engine as yours is now. Replacements are only about $100. and most if not all are made "you know where" but seem to do well. Whatever way you go, remember to buy one for the "Hitachi" style, not Prestolite.

I don't have a push button solenoid but I do have one of these but I have been told that they are rubbish and not to fit it.

We fought with one of those lever handle starters on a shovelhead this past winter, I agree it was a PITA, finally got it to work by modifying the internal parts. If it were mine, I'd put that part on eBay, it's not worth it to make it work.

I used to have starting problems even with compression releases on my 96"Evo till I went to a 3Sun MarsEB2112A cam with long duration, it actually bleeds off more compression when cranking, even hot.. 11.1:1 static with a cheap 1.4 kw starter.

I put one of these on my '79 FXE and it worked great. Never had any problems with it.
