Default Screamin Eagle HSR42 Jetting Fun

Everybody ready for another entry into "why did I take it apart when everything is mostly working fine?"

I ordered a rebuild kit since I don't know when it was last done or even if ever, knowing the previous owner; and a new choke cable since the choke goes back in almost immediately after pulling it. Pulled the carb off and immediately saw that the rubber cap for the purge port was completely split open and thought this was going to set the tone for my new adventure. Pop off the float bowl and the insides look brand new much to my surprise. Looks like I've got a 180 main and a 25 intermediary. That main jet seems a bit too big from what I've been reading from Mikuni's tuning guide and might explain why it feels like it runs out of power after half throttle, and according to their "roll off" tuning guide explains why it feels like I hit a brick wall during a hard roll off. Any insight from our Mikuni experts?

Don't know what I've got for the needle since it runs strong as hell in the lower revs I plan to not mess with it.

You might try dropping a bit on the main, but definitely fixing the vacuum leak will make a difference.

Put it back together and put a new vacuum cap on it and take it out to check.. If anything it's running lean up top because of the cap....

Initial ride report: I replaced the cracked vacuum cap and dropped both the intermediary and main jets from 25 and 180 down to 20 and 170. So far I've noticed that the torque curve and throttle response is much smoother, instead of screaming like a bat out of hell and then dropping off pretty quick, I lost maybe 10% down low but gained twice that through the mids/highs and keeps building power to redline unlike before.

Took her around a few more times over the weekend and power band is broader and more usable, so instead of blasting from clutch let off to 3500 and then stops, I'm seeing it kick in around 2500 and really start scooting from 3250-5000.

What I like my 42 is when power up the throttle it runs great but when you reach a certain rpm (no tach) it feels like a turbo kicking in.
