Gave up trying to find local. Had the guy at my aftermarket place de-pin the old one but can’t get the new pins far enough in without the tool.
Just ordered what you suggested from Summit.
shipping is damn near double the purchase price.
It’s too flipping hot to ride or wrench right now so I’m not in a hurry.

Using on in my 98 ultra. Have you had one go out, and if so, what are the visual/ running symptoms pointing to failure?

Still having same problem outlined in my last post, but have not had time to check a couple things. Heavy into wife's 66 mustang. Completely getting it back to factory wiring, getting dash guages back to working, someone with zero knowledge butchered the wiring.

Have to admit wiring diagrams are easy compared to the 98 with MM. Ken

I did have one go bad on me but it was my fault..I did not secure the plug wire properly to the plug and when going down the road if fell off and since I would get a misfire/stumble around 3100 rpm for about 150rpm and then clear.. At first I thought it was carburetor related so I started doing all kinds of different things to my S&S, well that didn't change a thing. So then I said okay let me try another coil cuz I have extras of them too, that didn't change a thing either. So then I tried a new ignition module and I still had the stumble from like 3,000 RPM to 3150... So for ***** and giggles I ordered a new pickup put it in and never looked back it cured my problem..

Default Points on 1979

Ordered a points kit from J&P for my 1979 shovel. Put it in only to discover HD changed the timing in 77 so they would not work. I understand there is a special set to use on models later than 1977s but haven't had time to find them yet.

Any idea what points kit would work in a 1984 FXST? Just got the bike a little over a month ago and it has points. i took the cover off to look and the little wiper was laying at the bottom It was running pretty good once it warmed up so I really don't know when it fell out. I'm guessing that changes the point gap. I can't remember the last time I messed with points. I've been messing with the foot controls for the past week returning it back to stock. Just about done and I don't want to try start it till I get the points straight.

You can get Harley points and sets at most auto parts. Standard Products HD1 is the last I ordered. Or get the points for a 1966 Chevy 6 cylinder truck. The only issue is make sure the condenser has a long enough lead.

Several things, make sure the coil is 5 ohm, lot peeps didn't change it when they swapped the factory electronics which used a 3 ohm coil. Next is dump the points and get a Dyna-S or the Ultima clone and good timing advance unit, 90% of starting and bad running can chased straight to a crappy advance unit. They usual cheap black ones that come in the kits are junk in a couple thousand miles.

Points wise if you keep them take the old ones to a good auto parts place like Napa, not Vatozone or O'Reilly's and have them match you a Blue Streak set, again the cheap Ebay stuff is junk. Again check the advance while you are in there, if you can wiggle the advance weights on the post's any it's toast, change it.

Amazon has the good stuff too.

Amazon Amazon

Thanks I did a quick search for the blue streak and HD1 came up. saved them on amazon. I also looked at the Dyna S. I will check and figure out how to test the coil, haven't done that since the 80's and it was a Kawasaki. I haven't even dug deep enough to know what to ask about the advance unit but I know how to wiggle stuff.

Been spending too much time playing with these damn foot controls. Brake side is done. Had to pull the caliper off to fully bleed it because of that loop downstream of the brake switch. One of the "brake abutment" clips was half gone on rear caliper. Looks like the bolt that holds the pin/ screw wasn't set right when they bolted up the caliper. Shift linkage arrived today. Just need to get that on without pulling the primary, had to hacksaw the pin out of the aftermarket piece.
