I had in interesting issue when I first got my evo bobber running.. It has a Spyke single fire coil that is slightly larger/different shape than the standard softail coil. The coil cover was aftermarket and the slot was a little tight where the coil wires came out. The edge of the cover cut into the rubber boot one the plug wire a little. I suspect this may have happened after I'd washed the bike but it sat all day at work, When I went to ride home the bike had a low speed miss. I pulled the cover and install a different one with more clearance and the problem went away.
Took it out for 50 miles yesterday. Still a little stutter, hesitation, but far less. I rolled back the advance curve to 3--so between that (it was on 5, and I am not sure that would do anything in this situation), and tweaking the mixture, things are better--at least in THAT ride. Have some Accel plugs on the way.
That Crane is a notorious POS which I learned of the hard way long ago. I believe it was designed to be good enough for the showbike billet barges of the day. I would begin by shitcanning it before it leaves you stranded. Due to my experience I couldn't trust the SS ones either.
I also agree with the idea that the cone is too hot for electronic longevity. The temp difference and vibration of being in the cone next to exhaust vs under a side panel is astounding. I am amazed they can get electronics to work in the cone at all.
For what it's worth that would be my starting point in getting things right.
