Default Starter removal?

Yesterday I dropped a battery box bolt and it landed in the abyss under the starter. I pulled the two bolts and unhooked the wires to remove it. The starter would only pull out about an inch and snap back in place. I'm assuming the starter gear is still engaged and wouldn't release. Is there a trick to getting it to come out? Luckily I was able to move up enough to get the fallen bolt recovered. But now I'm curious why the starter seemed stuck in there.

In order to remove your starter, you will need to open up your outer primary to get to the starter jackshaft assembly. You have to take out the bolt (circled), because that is screwed into your starter "shaft?" See pictures.

That would explain why it didn't pull free. Glad I didn't yank on it! Thanks.

Get yourself a manual - it will help in instances like this.

Get a lottery ticket too. With that kind of luck you could probably fund your retirement.

That washer with the rubber insert on the end of jackshaft is a one time use item. Will leak if you reuse it. Ask me how I know.

Yes, no, maybe, and if you just clean the parts, and uses a smears of Black RTV on the washer rubber section inside and out as its about seated in place to the bolt head, will seal up fine on the bolt shaft again.

If you yank on it to much you'll go blind!
