Exclamation Installing starter

Hi out there - I'm installing a new starter, or trying to in my 1989 FLHTC and CANNOT get it to work properly. Is there some trick to getting it back together on the primary side so it engages? The bolt that goes to the starter keeps popping out.... and just doesn't catch. Gotta' be something simple.

There are two different starters an early and a late, they have the end of the starter drilled for two different sized bolts. If the starter you have is an after market did it come with the bolts as many include both bolt. They drill the end of the starter for both bolts with the smaller one being slightly longer than the stock one. Try threading the bolt in with out the gears installed and see if it catches. If it does let us know. If not then you have the wrong starter. Hope this helps.

1993 and down the starter bolt size was 1/4-20 1994 and up the bolt changed to a # 10-24 The inner primary's changed also as well as the starter pinion shaft/starter ring gear jack shaft coupling etc etc More than you really wanted to know

Default Starter

The bolt fits the new starter. Threads right on. It doesn't seem to engage every time. Just clicks. No idea why. Only something this simple could cause such a headache!

First check and make sure that the starter is in tight and bolted flush all the way around, if it not it won't engage. Next make sure that the connections and grounds are clean and tight, you might want to put star washer under them. Lastly did the starter you replaced do the same thing, if so your problem may be the starter relay, stop/run, or ignition switch. Hope this helps
