On softail models, when did the factory stop using the speedo to maintain mileage and start using the ECM?
Looking to update my speedo because of LCD fade problem. Speedo functions fine just can nor easily read mileage or trip LCD.
Have my eye on a used Harley 67410-04A that I know I will need a wiring kit for but have concerns?
Anyone know for sure? Installing on 97 Heritage.
Thanks for any feedback.
I can't tell you the year but if it has LCD speedo then it is electronic and I would think the ecm would be keeping track of the mileage. My 98 Clasic is still using the manual speedo with the speedo cable to the front wheel.
cycleman11,
Thanks for the reply.
The 97 Heritage has the electronic speedo but mileage is maintained on the speedo. Harley converted to mileage being stored in the ECM around 2006 I think?.?.
This is the reason for my original question.
Want to know the year Harley changed to maintaining the mileage in the ECM on softail models.
Hoping someone on here knows the answer.
I know I have a 2007 street glide, I had to change the speedometer bought a used one off ebay and the mileage is on the speedometer not the ECM, I'm thinking it changed around 2011
Your 97 flstc does not have an ecm.. Mileage is stored in the Speedo.. you can look for a used Speedo that has a good LCD and transfer it to yours or get a new speedo from Dakota Digital MVX 2002, I Believe.. I don't Believe you can use one from a 2000 up.. But I have been known to be wrong..
If you have a 97 and it has an LCD odometer.
You have a hardwired speedometer.
Miles are in the speedometer.
If you buy a new unit then it will start at zero.
A used unit will read whatever is in the used unit.
If you move away from hardwired then you need a subharness.
The subharness can be bought at J and P cycle.
You will also need a speedometer from 1999...used or new as indicated earlier.
A much newer unit will not work with subharness.
You can look in J and P cycle to better understand.
Alternatively, take a look online for LCD replacement.
Even Evo's with M&M EFI the speedo was stand alone for mileage, ECM didn't control it. M&M was replaced by Delphi in 2002, would be guessing on how far into years the speedo but know 2005 still had carbs so no ECM but good chance the year would be a digital speedo needing a data link from a ECM.
Based on my research (which might not be that good), I think the Harley 67410-04A speedometer might work on my 97 Heritage if I buy the sub-wire harness.
The DRAG #2120-0250 states "Sub wire harness is required for FXST/FLST 96-98 applications; allows plug-in installation of late-style speedometer (407903) to 96-98 factory main wire harness".
Also, V-Twin #32-0587 shows "Speedometer connector kit is used to modify 1996-1999 OEM harness to the newer type Deutsch connectors.
Wiring harness can be used with the newer 2000-2003 electronic speedometers. Fits: FLST 1996-1998"
Both of the above appear to be plug and play for newer speedometers that are not controlled by the ECM.
On another forum, one of the members stated "speedo holds mileage until 09 or 10 model year then its stored in the pcm and speedo displays from pcm memory". Can anyone confirm if this is correct?
I maybe thinking about this wrong but wanted the expert opinions here before I shell out the cash.
