I'm new to Harleys - and just bought a used 2002 ModYear (Aug 2001) Heritage with about 14.000miles on it.
Imported to Spain from US - so full US carb'd model.
Having some real issues getting the speedo to register a dependable reading. I've scoured the web for info and have checked what I can.
Odometer and daily trip meter increase and trip is resetable.
Switching on - it always resets needle to zero. Set off and the needle is VERY eratic will jump up and down and sometimes seems to reset its baseline. I.e will read 20mph stood still or seems never to get above 30mph. Once smooth running - the needle CAN calm down and read what seems to be about right. But I cant be confident.
Taken the sensor out and there was a few filings present - cleaned but no real change.
Whipped through the error codes - all read as CLR
Only one thing - when all switched off - if the bike is rocked gently side to side the needle seems to rock a little. This (to me) seems a bit odd.
Before setting off on replacing parts (because everyting is MUCH more expensive over here) - would like a bit of feedback.
Sensor - OEM or something like JIMS/REVTECH etc? - Speedos - ditto? - I do not want a digital one though - OK!
Crying shame as the rest of the bike is great. I hate electronics!
My speedo went out when the bank angle sensor (along with some module I can't remember) went out and when the HD dealership was done with it and it was fixed, the odometer read just about 700 more miles when fixed, than what it read before the fix. Doubt it can be reset, so now my next oil change will be somewhat "early". Damn them anyway.
Your case could be something like mine.
Be aware that the HD speedo's shipped in their stock configuration will still overstate your speed (and miles travelled) by 3-4%. I've installed the combo speedo/tach and it was 3-4% out... i also changed the rear pully adding another 6-7% variance to the reading so mines out by about 10% now. I've just installed the Dakota Digital SIM-1 to correct the reading (you need to have the SIM-1 calibrated while you're rolling so either get a GPS and nimble fingers or use a dyno).
Most speedos are optimistic. BUT discovered this too
The GPSTran is designed to provide a digital speed pulse output for use by other equipment. Because satellite GPS is used to measure speed, the GPSTran is suitable for use in many applications where normal speed sensing methods will not work. The update rate of the pulse output is 5Hz with an accuracy of Âą0.1kmh. The Pulse per meter setting is configurable to suit most applications.
One of the calibration controls is a 100kph signal
