why couldnt the lapping be done with the pump on. with a small rag in the hole and a pair of tweezers to remove it. also a air compressor to blow out the residue before removing the rag
The lapping compound is grit (a form of dirt, sand, abrasive). You have the pump removed so that you may be able to thoroughly clean the pump after using the grit.
If you do not clean the grit out of the pump, you have just introduced a bunch of grit into your motor. That is not a good thing.

my oil pump does not have a check ball fitting at the top its blank. where else could it be there is also 3 horizontal pipe fittings on the side of the pump there are only 1 hose connected to the top fitting which im guessing is the breather. the supply line goes to the bottom of the pump

I doubt that is a Breather... Breathers are Not on the Pump...the bottom breathers are low on case behind pump...of course head breathers are into heads, rt side..

Not knowing what hose you speak of...I'm gonna need to assume (terrible word) that you are talking about the oil tank Vent!!! Not The Crankcase Breather!!!

Could be the return line too.. Tanks have both the return and breather on standpipes.. Might get a little on the return if the bike was just run..

Gonna need a picture to sort this one out, it has to have a check ball port, what may have been done it is something else.
