Default Advice On EVO Era Electra Glide

Hi Everyone, I'm looking to buy an EVO era Electra Glide. I've had Hondas for 40 years and have family and friends with Harleys and I now want one.

What are the key things to look for when looking at a potential EVO Electra Glide?

Any advice/tips would be appreciated!

Thanks. Kevin

I would say check out the evo section and browse around a bit here's a link.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/evo-84/

I have a older evo I bought sight unseen and it had issues, I would say look for oil leaks (Puddles under the bike),most upgrade suspension as the air assist sucks (Front and back), parts are getting harder to find, pros (For me) easy to work on especially carb bikes, wiring harness is pretty straight forward. I would say be prepared to tinker a bit.

If I was looking for another one, I’d take a bright flashlight and look inside the tank to see the shape of the tank lining for anything that age or older, then look at the bottom of the jugs to see if those gaskets are leaking/weeping. I bought a pristine ’95 last year, and didn’t know till a week later that the stator was kaput. Glad my ride home was only 20 miles or so. That’s fixed easily enough by the friend who bought it from me.

I’d much prefer a carbed variant than the EFI of that era.

All other things being equal I’d more readily pursue later model evos closer to ’98, but not to the exclusion of others in good condition. The fewer the after market mods, the better.

Welcome to the forum. I would avoid any heavily modified bikes.
Less is more in this case.

Why an Evo? Twincams are not much more money and sure pull the weight better.
I've owned both and now an M8,the 80 Evo always felt underpowered to me.
Of course there are many options to fix that but at a cost.
If I were you I'd try to find an early carbed Twincam with the gear drive cam conversion,I put 200,000 miles on the 2000 I owned.

An EVO because of the rebuild factor.

There is an 1986 Electra Glide on MarketPlace with no saddlebags and it looks like the battery is on the right side outside the frame. Is this right?

Agree with gonemad on the later EVO's. I like the top breather engines and some of the very early EVO cases had the left case race come lose in the casting. No good way to fix that when it happens.

All in all the EVO is a great engine that has proven to be reliable with a few upgrades. But I'd look for a 94 or later.

Thanks for all the responses....

How important is it to see a "cold start" of a potential bike?
