The tapered style could shear the key and spin when abused.

My guess is to lower manufacturing costs. Spline parts are much easier and quicker to produce. Absolutely nothing wrong with that style clutch. 90% of all problems were from improper removal/install of the hub/assembly.

Even with new dry discs, I don't know how well that style will hold up with an open belt drive. They work very well in factory oil bath though.
