Default operating temp

What is the normal range for the oil temp in evo's?? I am new to Harleys. I have a 94 fatboy and after a 30 minute ride at mainly 50+mph with outside temp of 85, it only got to 175 degrees. That is too low to burn off any water isn't it? Next question is what can you do if it is low? Different oil? Thanks

A good oil operating temperature range is 200 deg to 240 deg F. Water condensation and acids tend to build up in the oil if the temperature is consistently below 180 deg F, and oil thickness can become marginal at temperatures above 300 deg F.

Unless somebody else on the forum has a solution, I would suggest talking to your dealer for a way to correct this problem as it is wearing your engine components more than they need to be.

How do your plugs and your exhaust pipes look? Are they sooty? You may be running too rich which would cool the engine. You're getting your choke all the way off?

My 99 FXST (Evo) runs more or less at the same temp frange. Sometimes it reachs 200Âş F but the usual is to go between 150-180. I don't think it matters in an Evo, and I think it's normal. All we know that all Twin Cams run much hotter than Evos and in a Twin Cam is normal to go in the 200-240Âş F, but not in an Evo.

Javi

Here you have a link to another forum where the temperature ranges in an Evo are explained:

the evaporation of moisture in the oil is done inside of the engine. the engines internals get well above 212 degrees. as the oil passes over and through the hot engine parts the moisture evaporates and is expelled out of the breather. a 1/2 hour ride should get any moisture out of the oil.

mine seems to run around 160-180, even when tis 90-100 degrees out. i have a oil cooler but also have a thermostat for the oil cooler. i don't think it hurts anything. id rather it ran at 160 than 230.

I'm not sure how accurate some of these gauges are either. You're probably running hotter than your's shows. Beyond that, water doesn't have to boil to evaporate. Throw a pan of it on a 100 degree sidewalk and see how fast it disappears.
