Here's my 98 RK set up for solo riding.

Dunno brah, performance, suspension and handling can vary a good bit on all of them.

Do the larger clear windshields like panheads had or what they use with Heritages provide the same effect in comfort as the shark or batwing?

The fairing is wider than any windshield and is going to block a lot more wind. If it's cold you'll appreciate that, if it's hot, maybe not.

The foot boards are going to be in the same place regardless of whether it's a Road King or a Road Glide or Electra. They're ultimately the same frame, the only difference is fairing or no fairing and style of fairing, some have radios and some don't, and the ones with "ultra" in the name have a tour pak standard whereas you'll have to add it to the others if you want one. You will notice differences in tail lights and turn signals as well, the ultras and such have more lighting like a marker on the front fender. Other than little trim pieces here and there, there is little difference between the touring models other than the Road Glide and Road King which have a different fairing and no fairing respectively.

I have owned several Electra Glides and a Street Glide and liked the conveniences, however maintenance can be more difficult with the fairing. Changing the front fork oil at the dealer was $750 if they did it because of the fairing and the work involved just to remove the fork caps. I bought my first Road King a year ago and love it. I like not having the rats nest of wiring in the fairing, I find the windshield provides more than adequate protection and it can be removed easily if needed. You can purchase a batwing fairing that will fit on the quick detachable mounts of the windshield, but can be removed quickly if desired. Frame changes in 97 for the touring bikes will make a difference in available accessories as well, 97-08 seats and such will fit giving a large selection of aftermarket or used parts. If the stereo is not important to you, I would give the Road King consideration. The Road King Classic comes standard with cruise control as well.

Most versatile "touring" HD is the Road King. You can ride them naked and you can dress it up like an Ultra in an hour. This was my 05, setting up my 87 FLHTP the same way.

There was one for sale here for something like $9k that didn't sell for several months. I haven't seen it on marketplace in a while but I was shocked that nobody wanted it.
