Default Need guidance on better intake for '98 FXST engine

I am in the process of going through this bike and updating a few things like the ignition to the Dyna 2000i, louder horn, new skids, pads, etc.
I am also installing apes that I got new cables for, and when I get to the throttle cables I am wondering about what to do at the HD round hot box and cleaner set up. The motor is completely stock, with V&H Long Shots and CV carb.

I don't plan on souping up the motor, except for a new cam (Andrews 23 or 27) for her to stretch her legs, and I like the Long Shots.

Can anyone school me on an appropriate external breather setup and which filters provide better, cooler air? I just want to let the motor breathe better.

No inspections where I live.

Just about anything is better than stock for letting the motor breath better. Just stick with a full size air filter and pick one that looks good to you. I've got an Arlen Ness with a larger than stock filter but still accepts the original cover.

Are you running the factory screaming Eagle intake upgrade kit?

I don't believe this is a SE setup. The air cleaner is the factory round style with plastic molded baking plate that fits the cover quite snug. No gaps around the cover and backing plate...hot box.
I have looked at the Arlen Ness Big Sucker naked stage 1 kit but it still recirculates the breather fodder into the carb.

The DK customs kits are for Twin Cams and newer.

The Ness kit looks ok, but why dump the hot gasses into the engine again?

Step one, stop the head breathers from puking oil into the intake manifold. Few ways to go about it, and just depends on what air intake system you intend to use.

Step two, the CV carb are really good in regards to gas mileage, and when dialed in correctly, very good as well.
Or you can go with none vacuum activated slide carb, to give the motor more of a faster throttle response during throttle crack isntead (but will end up with lower MPG).

As for cam, figure out where the RPMS will be most of the bikes life, and cam it for this.
Yes, cam that has lots of high end HP is great for rev ranger racing, but your going to give up some bottom end power with the same cam, and leisure riding at lower rpms will be lack luster (worse with two up) having to shift down a gear to get the revs back up and back into the cam power band. Also, having to keep the motor rev'ed up to stay in the power band, means more wear and tear on the motor, and will be back into the motor faster, than say running a stock or ev13 cam where engine should last 100K instead.

Dano523, Thanks for mentioning the EV13. After my initial post I started reading more about that cam. It sound more like the ticket as I only want to improve the performance past stock to let her breathe cooler, cleaner air.

I am completely fine with the CV carb. After everything I have watched and read about it, just run with it and don't worry.

I will dig around on diverting the breathers and study up on the carb adjustments I will probably need to make.

On my RK with screaming eagle upgrade (K&N filter), that system still had the breathers dumping into the intake manifold, so capped off that port on the back plate, and installed a catch can to back plate to pipe to instead.

Other option could have been to just dump it out to the ground with longer tube, but trying to keep the bike from "Marking its spot" with oil to the ground in the garage isntead.

As for catch can that is bolted to back air filter plate, it has foam on inside of it, and during oil changes every 5K, only about an inch of oil in the catch can, and ease to dump out, since bottom of can just unscrews from the top section.

Good info and exactly why I took the EV27 out of my 95 heritage and put the EV13 in, best decision I made for every day riding.

I put an EV13 in my ‘96 Super Glide. It puts the power where I want it.
i have an S&S Stealth air kit. I drilled and tapped the breather drains and screwed in 1/8” hose barbs, teed the hoses together and routed them through the frame out past the belt and under the passenger peg. I painted a Prilosec bottle black and put a hose barb through the cap. That’s my catch can.
